Basic Types Home Elevators
Shaft-Less | Traditional Style | Tube Glass
There are a few basic types of home elevators, shaft-less elevators that typically can serve any 2 levels and do not require an enclosed shaft built around them, they have unique designs that make them safe without the need of the shaft. Traditional type elevators will require a 6-8" pit and an elevator shaft enclosing the elevator much like any building you have been in, these elevators can travel to 8 stops and are hydraulic or all environmentally friendly electric drive. Glass tube elevators or even glass traditional elevators will have an shaft made of polycarbonate or tempered glass allowing full panoramic view while travelling in the elevator, adds tremendous style to any home.
What are the stages to installing my home elevator?
There are two types of installations that happen, one is a new home build and one is an existing home renovation type elevator installation.

New Home Build Installation

The new home build is pretty straight forward and likely the elevator is already incorporated in your new home plan and can simply be executed with the progress of your new home build. We work very closely with the home owner and the builder to ensure that all the requirements for the elevator are understood and the preparation is done to suite the needs of the elevator ensuring a smooth installation.

All new home elevator installations MUST have the elevator contractor take out an ESA Electrical Safety Authority Permit on your home elevator even though your builders electrician has his own permit for the whole home. Its the LAW

Existing Home Installation

The existing home installation we first meet with you in your home and look for the most suitable place for your new elevator based on the type and size of home elevator that will meet your needs and space.

Once we have established the location for the elevator and set a budget and before any work can begin, we must start by obtaining a building permit from your local city building department to make the structural changes to your home to accommodate the new elevator. We are often asked is this step really necessary? Simple answer is absolutely! Any company that suggest that this step is not necessary is not representing your interest and simply looking out for their own interest to avoid a step that takes understanding of the process, some patience and a professional structural engineer to ensure the design and alteration to your home is done correctly and to building code or better standards. This step also provides the plan to execute the project ensuring that no steps are overlooked and that the safety of the home is not compromised by substandard work and practices that unfortunately happen all to often by shoddy contractors. Any company that misses this step is not a reputably company as this process is the Law in Ontario and All Canada

Once the building permit is obtained you may now commence the site preparations for the elevator constructing the opening or the elevator hoist-way.

Once the elevator hoist-way is prepared the elevator can now be installed, this can take between 2 and 5 days depending on the type of home elevator and the number of floors the home elevator will service.
Finally we will do an in-service with you and demonstrate how to use and operate your new elevator and all of its safety features. This is usually a good time to also promote good safety and reliability of your elevator by planning for future maintenance and safety inspections assuring maximum performance from your new elevator.
